New Zealand Visa Waiver requirements from United Kingdom

British citizens can now visit New Zealand for tourism purposes with the New Zealand eTA, an electronic travel authority designed for nationals from visa-exempt countries. The application is available online and very simple to complete.

From October 1st, 2019 onwards, British citizens must obtain an Electronic Travel Authorization (eTA for NZ ) before being able to travel to New Zealand for tourism purposes. Together with a New Zeland eTA fee, travellers are also required to pay the International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy ( NZ IVL) to support New Zealand’s infrastructure as well as to protect and help the natural environment.

The online application form for the New Zealand eTA for British citizens is quick and straightforward to complete. Upon approval, the NZ eTA from the United Kingdom will be sent to an email address provided by the applicant on the form.

Do the United Kingdom Citizens need a visa for New Zealand?

Visa-exempt travellers, including Brits, need to obtain a New Zealand eTA before departure. It is mandatory for all British nationals to obtain a New Zealand eTA in order to enter NZ, starting October 1st, 2019.

The New Zealand eTA for the United Kingdom is valid for 2 years or until the passport’s expiry date, whichever comes first. British citizens can stay in New Zealand for up to 6 months. What’s more, the eTA supports multiple entries, allowing travelers to enter and exit any time they want during the course of its validity.

From October 1st, 2019, transit passengers must also obtain a New Zealand eTA form UK before departure in order to gain the right of transit through New Zealand airports.

Once approved, the eTA will remain electronically linked to the traveller’s passport, eliminating the need to receive a passport stamp from border control officials upon arrival.

eTA New Zealand Document requirements for British Citizens

To successfully apply for the NZ eTA from Britain, it is necessary to meet the following eTA requirements and present the following documents:

  • Passport with at least 3 months of remaining validity after the intended exit date from New Zealand
  • A completed online NZ eTA application form for UK citizens
  • A scan of the passport’s biographical page
  • Recent digital photo of the traveller, passport-size
  • Credit or debit card to pay the eTA and IVL fees
  • Valid residence permit for the UK (permanent residents of the UK only)

Applicants are also required to provide a declaration of the purpose of travel and any criminal history, as well as to provide a current email address at which to receive the approved electronic visa waiver for New Zealand.

All visa-exempt nationals, including children, will need a valid eTA before travelling to New Zealand. It is only necessary to pay the IVL once during the 2-year validity of the eTA.

British applicants filling out the NZ eTA online application form on behalf of other family members must specify their relationship to the applicant. Parents and legal guardians of minor applicants must also attach a scanned official document confirming this status.

New Zealand eTA Application for Citizens of the United Kingdom

A range of information must be provided on the online eTA application form, as follows:

  • Personal info – Full name, birthdate, address, contact details
  • Passport details – Passport number, nationality, expiry date
  • Security questions, such as about history of criminal convictions
  • Travel itinerary – Hotel bookings, dates
  • Health history – Medical history, vaccinations

From October 1st, 2019, all airline crew and cruise line crew also need to obtain the NZ eTA, however, they are not required to pay for the IVL. The validity of the crew eTA is 5 years. Nevertheless, airline and cruise line crew visiting New Zealand for tourism purposes are required to apply for the tourism eTA, which is valid for 2 years, as well as to pay the IVL.

NZ eTA application fees are non-refundable in case of rejection or cancellation of the visa waiver.

How Long Does it Take to Get the New Zealand eTA from UK?

Travellers should apply for the New Zealand eTA from the UK at least 3 business days prior to the intended date of arrival to allow enough time for document and information screening by New Zealand officials.

Generally, most applications are processed within 1 business day and applicants are notified via email, once their NZeTA is approved. However, on rare occasions, some applications may take longer in case of errors or missing required documents.

Once approved, applicants receive the approved NZ eTA via email. The NZeTA is also electronically linked to their passport. Applicants are advised to print a copy of the NZ eTA to present at border control at the port of entry.

Holders of an NZ eTA from the UK must use the same passport to travel to New Zealand as the one used when completing the online application form. Applicants holding dual-citizenship should keep this in mind.
