Just a 45 minute drive from East London along the Wild Coast in South Africa, is a special place which somehow allows those who go there to exchange the cares of the world for the more important things in life. The coastal village of Morgan Bay lies nestled between majestic cliffs and a mile-long stretch of unspoilt beach. It is flanked by a stunning lagoon which carves open a sandy mouth to the raw beauty of the Indian Ocean.

This is South Africa's magnificent Wild Coast at its best. Yet in spite of it's incredible natural beauty, it is the simple memories of good times had there that people often recall when they speak affectionately of 'Morgs'. Morgan Bay is essentially a place of lifetimes of fond memories plenty of old ones, and many new ones still to come. It is a place of friends and family where both children's laughter and the cry of the Fish Eagle are second nature a sort of safe haven of halcyon days spent splashing in the sun and good times shared with loved ones. In Morgan Bay, life is able to stand still whilst the hustle and bustle of day-to-day city life passes one by. Where everyone is always on holiday, being removed from the present somehow enables one to reconnect with ones past. And as has been said by many a wise man: 'If you know where you're at and where you've come from, it helps to tell you where you're going'.

Time spent in Morgan Bay epitomizes everything that a good holiday should entail - a good amount of rest, good company, good food, good times etc. It's a place to get lost and find oneself, and a place to be oneself again.

Anyone who has ever been to Morgan Bay will understand what it means to feel welcomed back again. For those who have not been before, do yourself a favour and plan a holiday sometime at the Morgan Bay Hotel. We're pretty sure that once you're here, you too will understand why Morgs has become the chosen holiday destination for many fine South African families.

Mazeppa Bay Hotel

Nestled in a beautiful setting of palms and tropical plants, above the broad beach, Mazeppa Bay is characterized by its own Island. Depending on the tide, this is sometimes only accessible by a quaint suspension bridge, which joins the Island to the main beach.

Mazeppa Bay Hotel has a very relaxed atmosphere, where guests can be comfortable to walk around without shoes and leave the stresses of everyday life behind - including the shopping malls!

Mazeppa derives its name from the ship, the Mazeppa. The ship was captained by a CJ Cato, on its way to Delagoa Bay from Port Natal in 1842. The Mazeppa was in search of a British man-of war to rescue the Garrison, which had been besieged by the Boers. The captain steered the ship into what is now known as Mazeppa Bay for shelter and ran aground. Legend has it that its ruins are buried under the sand dunes at Mazeppa Bay

Mazeppa Bay Hotel was taken over by its current owners in 1995, the hotel itself was in quite a state of disrepair and much love and hard work was put into the hotel to make it what it is today. The hotel boasts a tennis court, full size snooker table, beach volley ball, table tennis, a trampoline for the children, DSTV in the communal TV lounge, and two bars in which to enjoy sundowners after a long day on the beach and rocks.

Mazeppa Bay has a 550 m landing strip for light air craft and a Helipad. The hotel also offers transfers to and from East London airport, which is a two and half hour drive away.

The rates are very affordable and include three home cooked meals per day. With a seafood dinner on a Saturday and a mini seafood dinner on a Wednesday, with favorable rates for children. There are also baby sitting facilities for parents that feel they need a break.

There are many attractions at Mazeppa, the main one being angling, due to the steep continental shelf, Mazeppa has much appeal for the game and shark fisherman. There is always a place to find shelter and a good fishing spot when the wind is blowing. Mazeppa also has its own registered boat launch off the beach, for holders of a valid skippers ticket.
Tackle and bait are for sale at the hotel, and there are also rods and reels for hire.

The bird life at Mazeppa is quite spectacular, and this can be experienced by going on one of the many walks around the Hotel. The Manubi Indigenous forest being a particular delight for bird and plant lovers alike. Other walks include the one across One Mile beach to the One Mile rocks at the end of the beach, where a patrol plane crashed during World War II while trying to make an emergency landing on the beach.

Mazeppa Bay Hotel has kept its old style charm, which keeps families coming back generation after generation, where friends are made and people have a chance to take a step back from their busy lives to really relax with their loved ones.

And all this is on your doorstep at Umngazi, an award winning family resort and spa. The thatch-roofed bungalows are situated amongst the indigenous gardens which provide the perfect setting for a totally relaxed holiday.

Spend idyllic days lounging on secluded beaches with only the waves crashing. Take a guided walk or strike on your own, explore the mangrove swamps, canoe up the river, myriad of birds and totally unspoiled natural beauty that this coastline has on offer.

Immerse yourselves in our waterways and discover the patient dedication of fly-fishing or indulge your wild side in the adrenalin rush of sea fishing.

Accommodation consists of sixty nine bungalows (some interleading) which have been categorized into five different categories namely: Garden, River, Sea, Emlonyeni (River Mouth), Honeymoon Cottages and our exclusive spa suites namely, Ntabeni (meaning on the hillside). Our comfortable bungalows are tastefully decorated, child friendly (except honeymoon, Emlonyeni and Ntabeni suites) and offer tea / coffee facilities.

To compliment this wonderful escape our chef’s offer delectable home cooking and fantastic local cuisine. Sample mouth-watering home cooking and other delights while lounging on the deck or find a private spot in our wine cellar, the Green Door or the riverside Gazebo where you can tantalize your palates.

Wind up the day by enjoying sundowners on a Fish Eagle Sunset cruise or on the deck where one can enjoy the stories of visitors from yesteryear in Basil’s bar.

Set high on the Umngazi hillside, with breath-taking views of the coast below, guests are treated to a secluded, tranquil experience, which is difficult to beat. Our dedicated, professional therapists are on hand with a full range of spa treatments and therapies. Each therapist’s treatment room is complimented by a private spa bath, which enjoys the same spectacular views of the beach and ocean. Feel free to drift off while you’re getting the royal treatment.

Children enjoy the art of playing whether it is fishing with gillies or sand boarding on the dunes. This is truly a child’s dream holiday where they run around bare feet in the mud, slip and slide on the slippery slide or where they make holiday mementos in the creativity corner.

Moms can soak up the sun around the pool or enjoy a bit of pampering at our Spa while little one’s are being taken care of by their nanny. The separate (very well-catered) dining room for kids under 5 years old, the nannies, and the entertainment team. My oldest son Leo still talks about the sandcastle-building competition and the treasure hunts.

A pram if you have a child under three, even if you don’t usually use one. Some of the rooms are a bit of a distance from the action and it’s easier to push them up the hill than to carry them.

Private dinner in the Green Door wine cellar, the mangrove walk, yoga on the beach, the spa (which has just received the Les Nouvelles award for the most unique spa concept category).
