Protea Hotel Mboweni Ruins is very close location to Stonetown and the Airport, located on the West Coast. Located in an old slave centre that eventually became a school for the freed girls.
The sea goes far out ( about 300m ) at low tide which was an interesting experience for me. For the history enthusiast this would be a good choice of hotel to stay at, because of the fascinating ruins in the gardens of the hotel complex.
13 Rooms furnished in Zanzibari style sleeping up to 30 guests max. - 3 star level also some did have a damp smell but was not an issue. Lovely pool area on the beach.
The buffet lunch was really excellent and tasty - a most enjoyable experience sitting high in the hotel dining area ( Raintree Restaurant ) under thatch up looking out over the ocean. Pleasant and friendly staff. The Mangrove Bar is perched over the ocean.
Dhow Cruises are available to some islands and sand banks off the coast from the hotel.
More basic but very pleasant hotel - perhaps more suited for couples.
